fff ~ daily joy

Hi there and welcome to Friday's Fave Five! We're counting blessings with Susanne and the Fivers at Living To Tell The Story.

1. Waking just before dawn to a moonlit morning

waning crescent moon. Sometimes called the old moon.

2. Blooming gladiolas ~ a dear friend shared some gladiola bulbs with me.

I planted them in the garden for cut flowers.

But, there is only one little row of them

and they are so pretty among the tomatoes and pumpkins,

I can't bear to cut them.

3. Bouquets ~  I don't have such scruples about my lavatera though.

They're my best cut flowers in the garden right now.

They make a sweet little bouquet for the kitchen table.

Last spring, I planted random packs of flowers seeds in the vegetable garden with a vague notion of a "cutting garden".

I've reaped a lot of joy from these flowers - for very little effort - but they probably weren't the best choice for cutting flowers. Next year I plan to be quite intentional with my selection. I'll be spending some time researching sites like PEI's Veseys Seeds.  A lovely winter-time activity to look forward to!

4. There's something quite magical about heading out to the garden every afternoon to "dig your supper".

Potatoes - red and white varieties, carrots, onions and beets (tucked underneath)

Add some lettuce

and a tomato,

with some meat on the barbeque, and supper is ready!

It's so satisfying to eat from your own garden. Summer's labour paid off!

5. And still on the garden theme - here's how I'll be spending the rest of this sunny Friday

Cutting up cukes and onions for Nannie's famous mustard pickles.

Want a closer look?

Yes, that's 50 pounds of cucumbers! I bought them by mistake. Usually someone just drops a few bags off because there's a cucumber glut, but the cukes didn't do so well this year. So, I had to buy. But not 50 pounds!

I don't know what I was thinking! They were inexpensive - only $6. So the price didn't tip me off. And the sales clerk carried them for me. So I didn't notice how heavy they were.  And I was in a rush.

Oh well . . .

Lots of pickles for the family this year!

I better get at them! Thanks so much for dropping in for a Friday visit.

Happy weekend!

with love,
